Data center developers face interconnection queues stretching five years or longer so they've started generating power on-site. As of this year, roughly 101 gigawatts of behind-the-meter natural gas generation has been announced for U.S. data centers, with more than 57 GW backed by equipment orders and about 7 GW already under construction. In Texas, ERCOT has received some 356 GW of data center interconnection requests more than four times the state's entire peak demand.
